For an FDA-class patient app, the obvious offline database had no at-rest encryption — unacceptable for medical data. Rather than swap libraries and lose its sync engine, we forked the database and patched encryption in at the native layer, keeping the offline sync intact. The fix was open-sourced. When the data is sensitive, security is an architecture decision, not a checkbox.
